One of my favourite poems of fall. I love the feel and mood and "winter in their cry....", so desolate, the feel of frost hanging in the air...
SOMETHING TOLD the WILD GEESE .....(Rachel Field 1894-1942 She wrote english lyrics for Schubert's Ave maria used in Disney's fantasia, and this poem has become a song.... She won the the Newberry award, and is on the Lewis Carroll award list)
Something told the wild geese it was time to go....
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered "snow"
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned "frost"
All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.
Something told the wild geese it was time to fly.....
Summer sun was on their wings, Winter in their cry......
