Rainy Day Things

On a rainy day: stack mosaic granny squares, as if making a cake.

On a rainy day: Save Smokey's paw prints for another day.
On a rainy day: Finish cutting out pattern pieces for next quilt.

On a rainy day: Watch Bo watching you.                                  Finish a soft cowl in fan stitch.

On a rainy day: Watch Cordelia evade Spencer, who stalks from below.

On a rainy day: bake cupcakes, slathered with Cake Boss frosting. See Spencer peeping from the gate at the window. Then go outside and stomp in  muddy puddles, and do it all again......

Gift

In the dead of winter. A gift. A gift that popped into existence, two summers ago. A day when Cordelia lounged in the grapes ,September 2013, on a hot muggy, grapes hanging ripe and ready for wine.  I grabbed my telephoto lens. Of course. Always nearby. And took a photo.
"Give freely to the world the gifts of love and compassion. Do not concern yourself with how much you receive.Just know in your heart it will be returned."  (S. Mariboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free)
Two years later . Morgan pencilled it  into existence in black and white. Capturing a moment. A gift. Supposed to be for Christmas. But even better on a grey, dank and dismal  February day.
"Gifts are made for the pleasures of those who give them..." (C. Ruiz Zafon , Shadow of the Wind)
Two years later, it seems  spring is springing. But I'm waiting for another cold snap. A bit of frost. A bit of ice. Maybe some snow. Like last year. This just seems too good to be true. But for now I have crocus poking up through new dirt. I contemplate covering it up with dirt. Make it wait for a few more weeks. But it will have none of that.Up it comes. Like little sentinels.
The rain drips.  I decided it was time to get in the pros. The Lawn and Garden People.Possibly you've seen them. They carry shovels, pick axes and tarps. And buckets of dirt. Have been waiting all year to do this. Got them to  dig and delve. Another gift. What would have taken me forever, took them one hour and two minutes. I timed them . Curious to see what four people could get accomplished. They were  lightning.

The deer next door watched as well.  The front hill never looked so good.  I can hardly wait for them to do the back terraces; overgrown and stagnant with yuck .  This is like a new hill. Idon't recognize it.Another gift. In the dead of winter. Well, this is winter for us. Sog and bog.
Two summers ago, Cordelia sat in the grapes. Purring. On a sept afternoon.
Two years later, she sits high on the fence, not by the grapes, since they are long asleep in the wet  and chill. She still purrs, is still sweet. Still comes and visits. She's waiting as well, I think. For this muck and wet to be over. For the grapes to start growing again. So she can sit in the vines once again. And purr. Have her photo op. Again and again.
"What greater gift than to be in the presence of a cat. " (Charles Dickens)

Meanwhile, we wait with bated breath for the drips to stop dripping, the mud to stop oozing and the wind to stop howling. And another drawing to be created.
In black and white. Another gift.
"Our talents are the gift that God gave to us.What we make of our talents is our gift back to God. "                                                            (L. Buscaglia)

"The FOG" by Carl Sandburg

                                     "The fog comes......
......On little cat feet.
                                  It sits .....
looking......
                                             over harbour......
and city.......
                                                  on silent
                                                    haunches......
and then moves on......" (Carl Sandburg 1878-1967)

When The Neighbours' Cats Come to Visit.

Today felt like April. Or May. The neighbours' cats came for a visit. In nicer weather they lounge around and snooze. They get you to stop  and sit with them.  Spencer is the snooziest. Morgan often picks him up, feet dangling, and cuddles him as if he were a teddy bear. He seems to know he's welcome.Smokey  peers in the door every day. His eyes  searching .  On a warm day like this he is  apt to flop on the doorstep to prolong his visit.

"I love cats because I enjoy my home, and little by little, they become its visible soul."
                             (Jean Cocteau)
And then there's this one.He came for a visit as well.  This young tabby. He toddles around after Smokey. He lives down the block. He bounces around like a ball. Smokey thinks he is great fun.

When they come to visit they snuzzle noses.
While Cordelia shows the world how pretty she really is.
"If a cat has decided to love you, there's not a great deal you can do about it." (K. Smythe)
And there is a sign of spring. Today, when the neighbours' cats came to visit. Very early. Too early. This bush will often bloom in winter, but only here and there. This year it is popping like popcorn. I think the cats have noticed the change.

When the neighbours' cats come to visit, they sit in patches of sun. Unmoving. Staring. Dozing.
                                                  Staring in windows.
Teaching the younger ones to circle.

"Cats have nightmares about: being chased by mice the size of dogs. Life number ten. Being bathed in soapy water then covered in flea powder.Work. Being laughed at for getting stuck up a tree. Turning into a dog." (Stuart and Linda MacFarlane)
And it's good to stop for a moment. Or more. When the neighbours' cats come to visit.

You Know it Feels like Spring....

Still winter. But feels like spring......
You know it feels like spring,  when the neighbours air  underwear on the line.
You know it feels like spring,
when  morning light starts to glow in strips of coral on the horizon.
You know it feels like spring, when bags grow on trees.
You know it feels like spring, when morning light makes  trees stark against the sky.
You know it feels like spring, when rain trickles, instead of thundering.

You know it feels like spring, when branches grow fingers.
You know it feels like spring, when Cordelia basks on the fence.
You know it feels like spring, when  seed pods multiply before your eyes.
You know it feels like spring, when Spencer wants a cuddle.
You know it feels like spring, when the ocean is not so fierce.
You know it feels like spring, when Smokey comes to stare in the door. Then something  calls him, and away he splashes, to run with the wind and the rain......
