ABOVE and BELOW

"It snowed and snowed, the whole world over,
Snow swept the world from end to end."
-  Boris Pasternak, Dr. Zhivago
ABOVE. At Mt. Washington it has snowed. Looks like marshmallow topping.
But Below. Not so much.  0 Celsius ( 32 F) with a chance of frost. Just a chance, mind you. Maybe a few whiffs of deer poop wafting across the yard.
Rain. rain and more rain. In this rain forest.Wind. Birds can still get their feet wet.
"The shroud of grey, and the silence that comes with fog."
- Om Malik

Fog. Of course. Lots of it. Like living in "The Hound of the Baskervilles".
And Above. Cloudy with a chance of deep sunsets over the mountains.
Which will clear. And show clean and crisp. My front yard view. Every morning.
"He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter."
                            - John Burroughs

Also part of the mountains that show in my front yard every day. Not as much snow as in previous years. But winter isn't done yet.
From the range to the Island trails below. Where it is grey and trees stick out like so  many toothpicks.
Here below. Cloudy, with a chance of rising rivers. Mud. Sog. Deer jellybeans strewn across the paths...... and a hint of frost to tease.Just a tad , mind you.
"I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn't show." - Andrew Wyeth

The Stars

"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." --Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
THE STARS by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)  Lecturer, philosopher, Poet. Another one of my favourite writers.
If a man would be alone, let him look at the stars.
The rays that come from those heavenly worlds will separate between him and what he touches.
One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design
to give man, the perpetual presence of the sublime.
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe...
And adore, and Preserve for many generations
The remembrance of the city of God which had been shown?
 But every night......
come out these envoys of beauty,
 And light the universe
 With their admonishing smile......
"Always do what you are afraid to do...." -Emerson

SUPER BLOOD WOLF MOON JAN 20-19

"Tell me the story about how the sun loved the moon so much that she died every night just to let him breathe....." -Hanako Ishii
Super Blood Wolf Moon last night. Never did see the red orb. But I got to see the eclipse and follow it, nevertheless. In North and South America it was a total eclipse. In eastern Africa and Asia a partial.
I timed it as best I could. When the moon first rose and was visible from behind the hill and trees it was about 6:28 pm approx
It still had not cleared the trees. The moon close to earth.
But then around 6:36 pm it did....
Yellow in nature. Clean. Last time we will see this type of lunar eclipse till 2021.
 About 7:25 the colour changed.
Moved higher. A hint of the Penumbra shadow on the left outer side.
 About 7:26 pm.
Around 7:46 pm the Penumbra became darker. More sinister if you will.
At 8:00pm approx it moved upwards.
By 8:15pm it was half way.
It was about three quarters at 8:30pm . Moving faster and faster. I had a hard time keeping up.
8:35pm...... and 8:40pm  it slid over the moon and took the moon with it. Here in Campbell River, B.C., where we are located, there was a basic shadow, no red, just complete and utter darkness. No stars.
"Go slowly, my lovely moon, go slowly..."

EAGLES

“Those eagles, like angels, don't distinguish between work and play. To them, it is all one and the same.”
― Rebecca Wells
 Eagles sitting above their nest.
Far away from the parking lot where I was standing.
With their nest  below them. They use the same next year after year.An eagle chick grows more quickly than any other bird in North America.
Secure . I think. Even though we had been having wicked winds.
“To soar with eagles all you need to do is believe that you can fly.”    ― Anthony T.Hincks
I waited for them to soar. The female is larger than the male. I was tryied to figure out which was which. She will be about ten to 15 pounds more. Her wings span about 8 ft.
I waited a long time. Long long time. I think the female is on the left. She looks bigger.
They called and called . Talked. Conversed.
 They mate for life.
Sitting up where they  can detect prey up to 2 miles away, they can see up to five colours, where humans can only see three.
“The Eagles are coming! The Eagles are coming!”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
The pair will look after 1-3 eggs.  Usually by Feb here .
 Hatching in 30 days.
I would love to see that.
And maybe now that I know where they live, I might just see that...
“If I had wings I would fly, I'd soar on high where only eagles dare"― Michelle Horst, Wake Me Up
