HUMMING..........

.....birds....Finally, after patiently waiting  for a long while, there are hummingbirds feeding. You can hear the buzz of their wings, long before you see them.  You can hear them dive bombing each other. The males are always  scaring each other away.
There are 365 species of hummingbirds in North America. Contrary to popluar belief they do NOT rest on the backs of geese as the geese migrate.
Fifty one hummingbirds  are on the endangered species list.
Five types live in North America.

Allen's, Anna's, Rufous, Costas and Ruby Throated.
Allen's and Anna's will summer in B.C. The Anna's usually stay all winter long.
The Rufous will travel thru to Northern California, on through Canada to Alaska. Then turn around and go back . That's one tough little ball of fluff.
This rusty coloured little one is of course the Rufous.

He likes to perch when not chasing the others. To conserve energy, the hummingbirds will enter "Torpor" to rest.
The hummingbird's brain is about 4.2 % of its body  weight. It's one  smart bird!
A humming bird can see and hear better than  a human.
A hummingbird's heart will beat about 1260 beats per minute.

Contrary to popular belief, hummingbirds DO like to perch. They will spend most of their life perching and looking around. They're not always flying around in a mad frenzy.Though it seems like it
Females LOVE shiny feathers. They do all the work ( well, of course they do). They build the nests. AND raise the babies.
                 Males sit around and perch.
Most hummingbirds only live one year. They have a lifespan of up to 10 years if things are good. Maybe if the male did not perch so much  they'd all live longer.....
They are the only birds that can fly forwards, backwards and sideways. They are amazing. Smart. Funny. Aggressive little things. And they are here.
