Perennial Heaven

Perennials. Spring is full of them. Have been digging up the flower beds, constantly weeding. Pasque flower is one of my favourites.Early spring flowers. Soft and gorgeous. First saw this when we lived in Edmonton. An  amazing poof of colour at the edge of  sidewalk borders.  I  must have a dozen here. Beautiful.

It's time to dig. It's time to add new perennials with the old. Everything is popping. Siberian Blugoss, perennial Forget Me Not. Another one of my favourites. The leaves are espeically wonderful with their speckled frosting. The flowers last quite a long time, I've noticed, and the leaves last even longer.
I got smart and bought a ton of sedums that would last and last. To act as fillers. They are cute, but will spread and spread. I planted Windflower, Aubrieta, Hostas, Japanese ferns ( about 4 of them) an Alaskan fern....also one of my favourites."Polystichum setiferum" ( How's that for a fancy name.)(Helleborus)
Goats Beard "Aruncus dioicus". Huge at 6ft tall, native to North eastern America, Europe and Siberia. Red Valerian "Centranthus ruber" ( another great name), and flowers in early summer.  And lastly a Helleborus niger. It has a romantic title " Christmas Rose". From the buttercup family "Ranunculaeae".  Have never planted a Helleborus. Unfortunately, when I was trying to get it out of its pot, the top stalks plopped off. Still plantable ( is that a word?) Still growable ( Is that a word?)
Lots to plant, ,still, on the porch. It's pretty bare right now.Trees just starting to sprout. Pots of dirt waiting. Penguin cat has taken to having an afternoon siestas on  one of the chairs, before he heads for home. When he gets his kitty treat, he snorts.......it's hysterical.

White Bleeding heart "Dicentra alba" is another one I just cannot do without. Elegant. Regal. Unusual and bright amongst the green.I like to press the little heart flowerheads. They look great on a homemade card.
One of my places to get away, is the greenhouse. Chock full of geranium seedlings, pots of sprouting sweet peas, and of course, Cordelia. My supervisor. I think she hids here from Spencer.

Cordelia likes to sit on the window ledge.  And Spencer  mans the empty pots by the back door.  Cordelia and Spencer give each other a wide berth. They each have their own job descriptions.

And the empty porch waits for fuschias, begonias, even sweet peas to be stuffed into pots with dirt.
And Penguin  calmly snorts and purrs. He's the supervisor of them all......
