WHO LOVES the RAIN....

"There's an endless autumn in me, scenting my thoughts like campfire smoke..." -Jarod K Anderson
Who loves the Rain?
WHO LOVES the RAIN by Frances Shaw (1872-1937)

Published in March 1914

And loves his home
And looks on life
With Quiet eyes
Him will I follow
Through the storm
And at his hearth fire
Keep me warm
Nor hell nor heaven
Shall that soul surprise
Who loves the rain.....
And loves his home..........
And looks on life
With Quiet eyes...

Many moons ago, I  made a  cake from scratch .  I was 16. My uncle had come to visit. My job was to make the cake for dessert.  I made the cake all right. Forgot the egg whites. And the baking powder............I plopped the batter  in a loaf pan. It was fairly solid.
When I turned it out, it dropped on the floor. "Thunk". Like a brick. But I slathered it with chocolate frosting and my uncle ate it anyways......my mother questioned its wondrous density.....I just licked off the frosting.
ANOTHER BOWL: Beat egg whites till stiff peaks form.
Fold into batter  gently
SPREAD batter into prepared pans.BAKE about 40 minutes

Let cool for 10 minutes  on wire racks. Spread with frosting.

FROSTING:

½ cup unsalted butter, softened, 1 pound powdered sugar, ½ cup whole milk, 1 tsp almond extract.

"To have a cake........to howl at the moon....to know true happiness.....I am happy!"-C. Joybell C.

DOG DAYS

DOG DAYS from 1919 by Amy Lowell  ( 1874-1925)
A ladder sticking up at the open window, The top of an old ladder........
And all of Summer is there
Great waves and tufts of wiseria surge across the window....
And a thin, belated blossom
Up and down ......sunlight.
Purple translucence against the blue sky
Tie back the branch, I say......
But my hands are sticky with leaves,
And my nostrils widen to the smell of crushed green,
The ladder moves uneasily at the open window,
And I call to the man beneath.
Tie back that branch.........
There is a ladder
Leaning against the windowsill
And a mutter of thunder in the air............
